This weekend workshop on Saturday, October 2nd from 12:00-5:00 pm CST, is perfect to learn the basics of silk painting using my Marker Resist Method. In just a few hours, you will create your own wearable silk scarf from start to finish!

Together, via zoom, we will create a wearable 14” x 72” scarf detailing gorgeous, brightly colored orchids. You will learn how to transfer the pattern, stretch the scarf, mix colors, and apply & set the dyes.

If you are new to silk painting, there is an option to purchase the workshop plus a silk supply kit that includes all of the needed silk painting supplies, including the scarf, pattern, dyes, brushes and more. Shipping is free with purchase.

Instructor:
Laura Wallis is a fiber artist and art educator living in Austin,Texas. In 2004, Wallis began to explore the diverse effects of silk painting and found a strong connection with the fluid movement and brilliant colors of the dye. Using a medium-weight silk, silk dyes and resist, she layers color to create form and texture, counting missteps as design elements that are sometimes more beautiful and interesting than the original concept. Wallis has shared her processes and techniques teaching multiple silk workshops in multiple states across the US. in 2019, Wallis was awarded Master Silk Painter (MSP) by Silk Painters International (SPIN), an organization of silk artists, educators, and practitioners. A Master Silk Painter is considered an outstanding silk artist in their skills, creativity and expertise in usage of silk and dyes, design and color. Wallis is a passionate about art education and sharing her knowledge and love for all things silk.

World Cyanotype Day - 20/20 Photo Festival

In celebration World Cyanotype Day, 20/20 Photo Festival is planning public cyanotype-making events throughout Philadelphia on Saturday, September 11th followed by a pop-up exhibition of the finished images at Cherry Street Pier on World Cyanotype Day, Saturday, September 25th.

First discovered in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, the cyanotype process was initially utilized to make blueprints. In 1843, however, Anna Atkins - the first photographer to use the process to create photograms - self-published the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, thus placing the process firmly within the realm of photography. To this day, cyanotype is widely employed in conjunction with botanical specimens, but contemporary artists have also found new and unique applications of the technique.

Join 20/20, and try your hand at this historic photographic process!

We will provide pre-coated cyanotype fabric (Jacquard Cyanotype Fabric Sheets), and you can bring negatives and objects to create photograms with or work with items available on-site.

If you’d like your work to be included in the pop-up exhibition, just leave it with the event organizer at your location and pick it up at Cherry Street Pier after the show.

Date: Sunday, September 12th, 10 AM – 2 PM

Locations: Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown, Historic Rittenhouse Town in Wissahickon Valley Park, Clark Park in West Philly, and more (TBD).

EAST MEETS WEST: BATIK + ENCAUSTIC with Susan Stover (4 days)

What do batik and encaustic have in common? Wax, of course! In this workshop, Susan Stover draws on her extensive background in textiles and painting to combine these two ancient art forms. Batik is a textile technique originating in Indonesia. It involves applying wax to fabric to create a pattern which resists the dye in the coloring process. The tools and methods of batik are very adaptable to painting with encaustic. This workshop will explore batik on fabric with the intention of incorporating the fabrics into encaustic painting. Students will be making lots of their own unique fabrics and will be encouraged to explore their own interests in mark-making and pattern. Demonstrations and discussions will illustrate how the fabrics can be used in an encaustic painting and the layering of fabric and encaustic can interact. Topics and assignments to include: stamp making, working with a tjanting tool, watercolor effects, layering fabric and color, batik, silk-painting, composition and art fundamentals. This class is intended for those with working experience of encaustic and are looking to expand their visual language. Featuring Jacquard’s Dye-Na-Flow Exciter Pack.

DATES: November 9, 12, 16 & 19

TIME: 1-3pm via ZOOM conference

Shibori Indigo Tie Dye Virtual Workshop with Catherine Ruhl

Learn the ancient Japanese art of Shibori or indigo tie-dye. First students will learn techniques for tying, folding, and dipping your fabric. Then students will learn how to prepare a vat of indigo.

Due to social distancing this workshop will be a virtual workshop. I recommend setting it up in a place where you can get a little messy (due to the nature of indigo). If you can't go outdoors you can put paper or plastic down to protect the floor (that's what I do in my Brooklyn apt).

All skill levels are welcome. Multiple pieces can be dyed in the vat and I would encourage you to invite friends to share supplies. I ask that each person purchases a ticket. Please contact me for questions! This workshop should be very fun!

We reserve the right to cancel the workshop if there are not enough sign ups. In the event that we must cancel, you will get a full refund. This event will not be recorded, and you must be present to enjoy. Thanks!
