dying 45% wool/55%polyester
  • Hi, I'm new here. I have two light grey dresses that I want to dye dark brown. They are 45% wool and 55% polyester. Can it be done?
  • HI Barney,

    It can be done!
For best results this will be a two step process. I'd recommend using Acid Dye and iDye Poly. The Acid Dye will take care of the wool and the iDye Poly will take care of the polyester.
Both dyes require significant heat to work so there is a risk of shrinkage but so long as you don't 'shock' the fabric it should be minimal.
I'd recommend dyeing with the iDye first and then the Acid Dye.
Here are links to both dyes - have a look and then let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Annette,

Thanks for this info. I am looking at Acid Dye 635 and iDye Poly 453 which seem to be the correct shades I am looking for.

Reading the instructions, should I wash the fabric between dye baths or just wait until the end and do it then? And if so, would you recommend Synthrapol?

  • Hi Barney,

It's not necessary to completely wash the fabric between baths - rinse out excess dye after the first bath then move on to the next dye bath and you'll be fine. If you want to use Synthrapol in the final wash that would be a good idea - it helps trap excess dyes and pull it away from the fabric.

    have fun!
  • Thanks Annette. Fingers crossed!! :-)
  • Let me know how it goes!
