Pearl Ex as substitute for shell gold in illumination
  • I tried mixing Pearl Ex (Brilliant Gold) with gum arabic and using it as a substitute for shell gold (powdered gold) in illumination, and it painted easily and looks great.

My concern is what its long-term (decades+) stability is in a use like this, assuming that the final product would be framed and displayed on a wall (hopefully not in direct sunlight, but you never know). Are the oxides used to coat the mica stable or might they alter over time?

If no one knows for sure, that's fine--I'm planning on doing some light tests on my own, but of course I won't get results for a long time.

  • Hi Mel,

PearlEx is very light fast so should be stable for years to come.
