Painting FAQ

How do you heat set the Textile Paints, Lumiere, Neopaque,
and Dye-Na-Flow?

There are a few ways you can heat set these products:

  • Ironing - Direct heat is best for heat setting acrylic textile paints. Use a dry iron and iron on the reverse side on the appropriate setting for the fabric.
  • Dryer - Have the dryer on as hot a temperature as the fabric will take for about 20 minutes on medium to high.
  • Heat gun or hair dryer - Apply the heat ideally when the textile paint is still wet. Be careful not to burn the fabric!

Do I have to heat set or is there any other way to fix these paints?

You can use our Airfix to set our acrylic textile paints. Add a little bit to the paint and let cure for 24 hours. The Airfix and paint mixture is good for six hours so add it to the paint right before you are going to use it

Please explain the difference between Dye-Na-Flow, Textile Colors, and Neopaque?

Each of these products was developed because of their suitability for use on certain substrates or in the use of certain techniques.

  • Dye-Na-Flow is a pigment suspended in a very liquid acrylic binder that will not stiffen some fabrics. It works similar to the way that dye acts on material. The reason for this product is that it can be used on any untreated fabric natural or otherwise and are very transparent. It has the viscosity of water and can be used in the silk painting technique.
  • Textile Colors are medium-bodied acrylics available in an extensive range of colors. These can be used without the use of a primer or resist on the fabric to obtain detail, unlike Dye-Na-Flow, which requires these. They were engineered to be soft and permanent on all untreated fabrics and very affordable.
  • Neopaque is a light-bodied acrylic that can be applied to a number of surfaces. The Neopaques are opaque and bright, even on dark backgrounds and their high pigmentation provides excellent coverage. The binding medium in this pigment-based paint has a very high degree of flexibility, thus it won't crack or peal on the substrate's surface. This quality is very useful for fabric and leather.
  • Lumiere and Neopaque will go onto virtually any surface that has some degree of absorbency such as wood and paper, etc. There is some overlap in function in our products, however they all express their own unique qualities and strengths. Most of our customers make a choice based on what they want the paint to do and their budget.

Can I mix the Lumiere, Neopaques, and the Textile Colors?

Yes, since they are all acrylic paints. Keep in mind that the consistencies of each paint are different, so your resulting colors may be thicker or thinner.

Do you have a paint that will work on synthetic fabrics?

Any of our products that are classified as textile paints will work on synthetics. These would be the Jacquard Textile Colors, Lumiere, Neopaque, and Dye-Na-Flow.

Can I thin the Lumiere and Neopaques for airbrushing?

It can be diluted by up to 25% to pass through an airbrush.

What can I use that will give me results closest to a dye that is safe to use with kids?

Dye-Na-Flow is already at the correct dilution to flow most like a dye. It conforms to the government ASTM standards as non-toxic.

Can Lumiere metallics be used as a resist in silk painting?

Lumiere will resist the dye to a certain extent. The result will depend on the weight of the fabric, the amount of Lumiere on the fabric and how heavily you saturate the fabric with dye. Keep in mind that it is not formulated as a resist, and you might have better results with one of our metallic resists.

I've followed all the directions for heat setting, but my paints are washing off. What did I do wrong?

Make sure that you are using a dry iron at the correct temperature setting for the fabric. If you don't heat set at a high enough temperature for a long enough time, the paint may not be thoroughly set. Sometimes if you are using a top loading washing machine, it can abrade the paint from the fabric. Pre-washing fabrics before doing any surface treatments to remove any factory sizings may also help.

How do I use Lumiere for stamping?

You can use the Lumiere straight from the bottle. Try applying it to the stamp with a sponge brush or make up sponge.

How are the Lumiere Hi-Lite colors used?

You can use Lumiere Hi-Lite colors on dark backgrounds and you'll see the color as a sort of iridescent red (or violet or blue). On light backgrounds the color will disappear more. Try it on a variety of contrasting backgrounds for interesting effects.

Are the Lumiere metallics dry cleanable?

Yes.

What is the best way to paint a sofa?

This is not an easy undertaking. If you cannot remove the fabric from the couch to dye it, the best product to use for painting a sofa would be the Dye-Na-Flow. Keep in mind that it is still an acrylic paint and may change the feel of the fabric. If you are trying to hide stains, also keep in mind that Dye-Na-Flow is transparent and you may still see the stains. Use the Airfix to set the Dye-Na-Flow. Always do a test on a scrap or somewhere inconspicuous to see if you like the results.

What is the best product for suede and leather?

The best paint to use would be our Lumiere or Neopaque. You also might want to experiment with our newest product the Piñata Colors, which are colored inks suitable for almost any surface.

When do you use the Flowable Extender or the Colorless Extender?

Both do the same thing: they lighten the color without changing the consistency fo the paint.

You can also mix Pearl Ex in either one to create your own unique colors.
