Dyeing FAQ

How long are MX Dyes good for when mixed with water?

Procion Mx dyes, known as cold water reactive dyes, are not stable in water. They remain stable in powder form but as soon as they are mixed with water they will begin to react and degrade. This reaction is speeded up considerably in the presence of a base such as Soda Ash. Generally, once Soda Ash has been added to the dye/water mixture the solution should be used the same day. However, some people claim thay can store this mixture successfully in the refridgerator and use it as much as a week later. It will color the material, but you will also lose a certain amount of color too.

Is Soda Ash only good for one use?

Soda Ash, also known as Sodium Carbonate or washing soda, remains stable in powder form indefinitetly. After it is dissolved in water it remains stable for a very long time and may be stored and used at a later date.

Why are my colors coming out in pastel shades?

If you attempt to dye fabric that is a mix of cotton and polyester, or some other synthetic, you will only dye the cotton portion of the blend. So after you wash the fabric all of the color will come out of the synthetic portion of your fabric and you'll be left with a pale color.

How do I remove dye from my hands?

If your hands are stained you can remove the dye by using hand cleaner with a dye reducer in it like ReDuRan (sold in tubes).  You can wash your hands in a very dilute solution of bleach and water. But no matter what, the colors will disappear from your hands in one day with regular washing.

How do I use Procion MX Dyes if I have hard water?

Hard water will interfere with dying. This is a common problem that must be avoided. One way is to add a softener to the dye bath. Sodium hexametasulfate. We sell that as Calgon. Another solution is to use bottled water.
