Dyeing colored denim
  • Hello, could you kindly advise me how best to dye colored denim to a dark black denim while maintaining the denim look. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thank you very much.
  • I would recommend using iDye natural: http://jacquardproducts.com/idye.html. For deep blacks you'll want to dye on the stove top (in a stainless steel pot) with the heat up. (This is assuming your denim is 100% cotton...)
You can also use Procion MX with soda ash: http://jacquardproducts.com/procion-mx.html. With PMX dyes, the process is only slightly more involved...
  • Unfortunately, it's impossible to maintain the denim look. The denim look comes from having white weft yarns and dyed warp yarns, but when you dye your blue denim black, there will be no more white weft yarns. What you get will be more like plain dyed twill.
  • If denim has some spandex (2-3%) I'm assuming from my reading here that I should go with procion-mx with soda ash. Correct?
  • Neither PMX nor iDye Natural will dye spandex. However, 2-3% is low enough that you won't notice it. If it were 50% spandex you might have an issue. But if 97% of your fabric is dyed black, you probably won't notice the 3% that didn't take the dye...
