Post-Dye color setting
  • My roommate and I tie-dyed some awesome sweatshirts a few days ago but we were dumb and didn't pre-treat them in soda ash. We used Procion MX dyes and we are worried about losing the color when we rinse them out. Is there a way to fix the dye onto the fabric post-tie dye??

    Thanks so much!
  • Yikes!
Well, there are a couple of things you could try. First, with completely dry sweat shirts, you could mix up the soda ash solution and sprinkle or spray it onto the sweat shirts until they are very wet (not drippy, but definitely wet) and then wrap them in plastic or put them in a plastic bag. Let this set for 24 hours, then rinse, then wash. The problem you may run into with this method of setting is that your colors may run and create some muddiness.
The other thing you might want to try is to purchase some sodium silicate (aka waterglass). This can be purchased at pharmacies or hardware stores. It comes as a liquid. You would paint it onto the dry sweat shirts, wrap in plastic or plastic bags, let set for 24 hours and rinse. This won't move the dyes around as much, but you would have to purchase another product.
