Newbie mistake - fixatives?
  • Hi,
I'm new to dyeing and I dyed a dress using idye using the stovetop method. I didn't have enough salt, so I just used a small amount that I had in the cupboard - later realising that the salt is used as a fixative.

Is there anything I can do now that the dress is dyed and dried to fix the dye? I am concerned that when I wash or wear it the dye will bleed.

Will washing it in salty water now help? I've ordered some of the iDye dye fixative product - but I'm not sure if i've left it too late!

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  • The salt helps a little with the fixing, but the fixative you ordered works even better. It is ok that you are doing it later. The fixing step can be done at any time after the dyeing has taken place. It will not add back any lost dye from washing, but it will prevent future losses of color.
