Idye and soda ash
  • Instead of using the salt with the Idye can you soak it in Soda Ash before dyeing.

There's no reason to. Soda ash fixes fiber reactive dyes to cotton and rayon, but it won't do anything to fix the direct dyes in your iDye.

If the instructions on your packet of dye call for added salt, use it. The instructions are there for a reason. Carefully follow the instructions if you want to produce the best results.

Personally, I prefer Procion MX dye to iDye, if you're dyeing a plant fiber such as cotton. The results last longer, and no hot water is required. Procion MX dyes do require soda ash.
