one color dyeing
  • I tried to tye-die using only one color, Procion MX Burgundy. It came out green around all the edges. What did I do wrong? How do I not make it turn green?
  • Some dye colors are made of only one color of dye, but many others are mixed from two or more other dye colors. For the Procion MX dyes, you can see which are the unmixed single-hue colors by looking at my page at Which Procion MX colors are pure, and which mixtures?. If a color is mixed from other dye colors, the different colors can separate out at the edges of tie-dye.

To keep the different colors from separating as much in tie-dye, you can mix your dyes with a dye thickener, either sodium alginate or Superclear, before you use them. See Sodium alginate, Superclear, and other dye thickeners.
