Dyeing a vintage cashmere coat
  • I have a vintage cashmere coat with a silk lining, both ivory-colored, and I'd like to dye it black or dark blue to cover some permanent stains. Since it's so big, my only real option is the washing machine. So... can this even be done without felting the cashmere? If so, what product/process do you recommend? Would black be okay, or would the blue work better? Thanks for any help you can give!
  • Hi Kim,

I'd not recommend trying to dye your coat in the washing machine. Between the heat necessary to ensure a good color and the agitation of the machine you would, at the very least, shrink the cashmere.
If there is any way you could get your hands on an outdoor gas grill and something like a big ol' lobster pot or canning pot dyeing the coat is certainly possible.
If I can be of any further help, don't hesitate.
